How to Use Grid Lock

Create a New Rig

  1. Select two or more layers
  2. Click the Grid Lock button
  3. A container shape layer is created, and your layers are linked to the grid

Customize Layout

Adjust controls on the container's Grid Lock effect:

  • Direction: Horizontal, Vertical, or Wrap
  • Align: Start, Center, End, Space Between, or Space Evenly
  • Cross Align: StartCenterEndSpace Between, or Space Evenly
  • Gap: Space between items
  • Padding: Inset from container edges
  • Reverse: Reverses layer order
  • Influence: Blend between original position and grid position (0-100%)

Double-click the container in the Comp Viewer to resize it.

Comp Size Mode

Locks the Grid Lock container to match the composition dimensions automatically. The container stays centered and fills the entire comp, dynamically adapting if the comp size changes.

How to Use

  1. Select only the Grid Lock container
  2. Click the Grid Lock button to toggle Comp Size mode on
  3. The container name changes to Grid Lock Container [Comp Size] to indicate the mode is active
  4. Click again (with just the container selected) to toggle back to custom size mode

Add Layers to an Existing Rig

  1. Select the container and the new layers you want to add
  2. Click the Grid Lock button

Unlink Layers from a Rig

  1. Select the rigged layer(s) you want to unlink
  2. Alt/Option + click the Grid Lock button
  3. Layers stay in place, expressions are removed
  4. Empty containers are automatically deleted

Create a Nested Grid Lock

  1. Select 2 or more layers that are already in the same rig
  2. Click Grid Lock button
  3. A nested container is created that subdivides the parent grid

Create a Nested Grid Lock

  1. Select 2 or more layers that are already in the same rig
  2. Click Grid Lock
  3. A nested container is created that subdivides the parent grid

Tips

  • Layer stacking order determines layout order
  • Container size can be animated. Use the rectangle shape group's Scale property.
  • Use Wrap direction to create grid layouts that reflow when you resize the container
  • Animate Influence to blend layers in and out of the grid
